Your Opportunity
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to serve as a Laboratory Coordinator and Academic Officer within our dynamic Institution. This combined role requires a blend of administrative and laboratory management skills to support both the smooth running of our forensic science laboratories and the effective delivery of academic programmes.
About You
As Laboratory Coordinator and Academic Officer, you will work close to the academic team and the students to facilitate laboratory sessions and research, using advanced and up-to-date systems.
The following are our required skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field (Equivalent to EQF level 6)
- Excellent problem-solving skills including troubleshooting and identifying the issue, proposing efficient and effective solutions and implementing solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as a consistent, dependable performer with an excellent work ethic
- Keen attention to detail, organised, efficient and proactive
- Strong time management skills and comfortable working to deadlines
- Right to work and based in Malta
- Proficient in Microsoft office suite inc. Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.
- Ability to communicate succinctly and accurately in verbal and written English and Italian
Additional Skill and Qualifications (Desirable):
- 2 years of previous experience in a similar role
- Master’s degree in a relevant field
- Additional language, especially Spanish, French or German
- Familiar with Student/Laboratory Management Systems
- Familiar with academic processes
Key Responsibilities
The laboratory coordinator:
- Oversees the day-to-day operation and maintenance of our forensic science laboratories, ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment for students.
- Plans, prepares and maintains labs, equipment, materials and reagents for the laboratory sessions, ensuring accuracy and availability of inventory using our laboratory management software
- Demonstrates proper experimental techniques to teaching assistants, including theoretical background information for the experiments.
- Supervises aspects of the laboratory including implementation and adherence to all applicable safety regulations.
- Supervises and gives support to the instructional laboratory activities forwarded to the students and other relevant parties.
- Monitors the effectiveness of the laboratory exercises and assesses the need for changes in the laboratory course content;
- Is present during laboratory sessions to oversee lab instruction.
- In consultation with the Academic Manager, the lecturer assigned to the course, and together with the teaching assistant(s) helps to prepare and administer lab exams.
- Ensures clean up and safe disposal of hazardous materials according to all necessary safety guidelines and regulations.
- Coordinate laboratory events, workshops, professional training and research projects
- Subject to the assigned lab budget, orders and obtains necessary materials (including perishable supplies), contacting suppliers directly to ensure technical specifications, best prices and availability are met.
Academic tasks:
- Assist in student administration – scheduling, teaching, learning, laboratory procedures, assessment and documentation.
- Contribute to the Academic department’s overall administrative tasks, as required
- Plan, prepare and maintain digital library resources.
- Support in managing ERASMUS + platform and programmes
- Support in business development and marketing where appropriate.
