A New Memorandum of Understanding Signed: Varna Free University Becomes a Strategic Partner of the European Forensic Institute

The European Forensic Institute (EFI) is pleased to announce the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” in Bulgaria, establishing a strategic academic partnership that strengthens international cooperation in forensic education, research, and professional development.

The agreement was formally signed by Professor Petar Hristov, Rector of Varna Free University, and Andreas Melinato, Head of Institution at the European Forensic Institute. This partnership marks an important milestone in expanding international collaboration and creating new opportunities for students, academics, and researchers from both institutions.

The Memorandum of Understanding opens the door to a wide range of initiatives, including student and academic staff exchanges, collaborative educational programmes, specialised professional training, scientific research projects, and cooperation in doctoral education.

The agreement was signed during EFI’s visit to Bulgaria, where representatives from both institutions participated in a series of meetings, workshops, and professional discussions focused on the future development of shared academic and research initiatives.

These activities aim to strengthen the international dimension of forensic education by promoting academic mobility, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and best practices, and fostering stronger professional networks across Europe.

During the visit, Andreas Melinato emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between higher education and professional practice.

“Our mission is to bridge the gap between academia and the professional world. This partnership represents the beginning of a broad and meaningful collaboration that will allow us to develop joint programmes, expand Erasmus opportunities, promote lecturer and student exchanges, and share expertise that will benefit both institutions.”

Melinato also highlighted the growing demand for highly specialised forensic professionals and the evolving role of higher education in preparing the next generation of experts.

“For many years, forensic work was often carried out by professionals from related disciplines such as biology, engineering, or psychology. Today, universities and specialised higher education institutions play a fundamental role in educating dedicated forensic experts with the appropriate scientific background, practical skills, and professional standards required by the field. This represents a significant advancement for forensic science in Europe and beyond.”
